You’ve decided you want to buy a basketball hoop, but make sure you know the answer to these questions before making your purchase.
Location
You need space to play basketball. A large, paved, flat surface like a driveway or a custom court is ideal. It is not safe to place your basketball hoop on a street or sidewalk and could be illegal.
Portable or In-Ground
Is a portable or in-ground hoop right for you? A portable basketball hoop has a large plastic base with wheels that allows you to move it to different areas. In-ground systems don’t require as much space, but they require custom cement installation. They are permanent and won’t move, but they are generally more rigid and stable for a more professional feel.
Backboard Material
There are several types of basketball hoop backboard materials available.
- Graphite/Polyethylene: These are generally designed for young children and are the least durable.
- Acrylic: These backboards provide a clear playing surface and are regarded as ideal for intermediate players.
- Polycardonate: Polycarbonate backboards are high-performance backboards. They feature clear, arena-style glass that can be shatter proof.
- Tempered Glass: Top quality, these backboards are professional styled and high performance.
Backboard Size
Backboards can range from 44″ to 72″ depending on needs. A 72″ backboard is regulation-sized while a 44″ backboard is sufficient for youth players. More professional and aggressive players will appreciate at least a larger 54-60″ backboard.
Height Adjustment
Basketball hoops are adjustable in height and can be adjusted down from the regulation 10 foot height. If you plan to frequently adjust your backboard height, make sure that there’s an easy mechanism available.
